Common Sense
Common sense is a myth.
Everyone I've ever met has some sort of sense. None of that sense is very common with another persons sort of sense. One persons common sense is another persons act of stupidity.
I've heard these three sentences in the past few months:
"I only ever use first class stamps. The letter arrives quicker! It's common sense!"
"Unless it's for something important, using second class stamps is common sense. It's cheaper!"
"It's not common sense to send mail when you can just send an email. It arrives instantly and it doesn't cost a thing!"
So what's the deal with telling other people they don't have common sense?
Feminism sucks
I can't stand feminism. It completely offends me. The idea that women are better than men, or that all men are wankers, it's just complete bull.
I know, I know, I've spoken about this many times before.
But things keep popping up around me that simply drive me crazy. Woman who insist that they get treated badly by men, and blame it on the fact that they're a woman. Men who get completely slandered by women for doing something nice, such as holding a door for a woman - even if he'd do that for anybody. And even women who get criticised by others for conforming to gender stereotypes, when all they're doing is being what makes them happiest.
Why use all these excuses for not performing to your best? Someone I know recently told me about her experience in business school - it was a mainly male dominated course, and two of the four women who took the course dropped out, because they thought they wouldn't be able to get by in a male dominated environment. That's a lame excuse.
The overall message I wanna put here is that, if you wanna do something where you are a minority, like a woman in business school, don't let the fact you're a minority stop you from doing it. And don't blame the majority for not letting you in, either. Just go out and bloody do it, and stop looking for things that could stop you.
“The Truth”
I don't care whether you're Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Jehovah's Witness, Muslim, Seek, Mormon (insert name of any other religion here), I will feel incredibly uncomfortable and rather irritable if you say you believe you have found "the one truth".
That includes people who say "There definitely isn't a God".
I don't believe in any God, but I've never considered myself an Atheist. It seems a tad too arrogant to assume that, just because we believe (or don't believe) in something, that makes it definitely true.
The UK Riots
I'm angry! I object to this sort of thing! And I want to do something about it! So, I'm going to riot!

From what I understand, the point behind the riots going on at the moment is a build up of anger at the government and this guy getting shot was an outlet for the rage. If it wasn't someone getting shot, it'd be someone not getting arrested soon enough, or a police officer acting like a human being (god forbid!) and making some other mistake.
Blaming the government seems to be a bit of a fad at the moment and it worries me. I worry that people feel like their lives are so out of their own hands, so out of control, that they need to use their anger to grab at it back. We've been taught that, when something's wrong with the world, it's the governments responsibility, not our own, to fix it. They don't open their eyes, they don't think for themselves for two minutes to really understand what's going on past what they've been told by their peers and the newspapers. They make up their own flawed reasons why it is what it is and don't question it.
But who are the government? They're still just a bunch of people, just like you or me, with people screaming down their necks to change this and that and decrease taxes and increase benefits and give more or less aid to the middle east. They have their own agenda, even if it is to make the rich richer and I'm not saying that's okay, but perhaps instead of knocking on their door and saying "Hey, hurry up and change this!" take it into your own hands and set up something that'll help people in the same way, without waiting for the government to sort it out.
And until then, chill out, drink tea and carry on!

More Confusion on Feminism…
I've blogged about feminism before. Back then, I was confused about why most people I meet who call themselves feminists are more interested in becoming "more equal" than men, rather than a nice, balance of equal. This time, I'm confused about women who feel the need to become men (not literally) in order to feel empowered.
This makes no sense to me.
Women don't need to act more like men because women aren't men. I hear women on TV, talking about what to wear in order to get by in the workplace, and they're talking all about how women aren't wearing enough "masculine clothing". And how "it's a mans world, you need to act like a man to get by in this world" and the whole time I'm slamming my head into the desk over and over again until my forehead is sore.
On opposite end of the spectrum, there are the women who are overexaggerating the idea that you can be super-duper feminine and you'll be better than men. Not "equal to men" and this time the idea seems to not even be "more equal", but better than. Music videos like this one (below), where the idea is "I can play american football better than you in broken heels":
Since when did women need to prove themselves as "better" than men? Since when did we need to dominate and own the world as if we were somehow owed it? Why is there even a debate about who is better? Everyone is different. Why do we need to make a point that my differences are better than your differences?
Microsoft at e3 – Still for gamers?
So, e3 is here again and Microsoft has given us a bit more information on Project Natal, now known as Kinect. And, as expected with a motion sensor technology, it's going for sporty games, games that involve moving your body completely, etc, and so most people are crying "copycat". And I don't blame them. I also don't blame them for feeling a little frustrated, after all the Wii was an enormous let down and I rarely find a gamer who enjoyed playing on the Wii for more than a few hours. So why is Microsoft going down the same route?
I've often held the opinion that Microsoft isn't actually in the gaming industry to make great games, but to develop great technology. I doubt the Kinect will inspire too many fantastic games, from what we saw from the Wii, no one could really be bothered to make anything that really used the technology AND make it fun and inspiring for the players and the Kinect could quite easily go down the same route. However, the technology that Microsoft are creating (if it actually works as well as they say it does, and it's not completely faked) is more likely to be used in a work enviroment. Not necessarly an office cubicle position, but an enviroment such as a designer, where using a mouse or tablet is less intuitive than using your hands to drag, or your voice to give commands.
Realistically though, it's likely that Microsoft will end up rushing the project, so we end up with slow, unresponsive or confused feedback. This would ruin the development of a technology that could save a lot of people a lot of time and energy. But hey, maybe another company will come along, get inspired off the Kinnect and make their own version, and do it properly.
If God was one of us.. he’d be a roleplaying geek.
He'd be one heck of a Dungeon Master. I imagine him sitting on his gaming table, rolling d20s around and laughing hysterically when evil_genius2000 rolls a 1. All of us are just characters in this weird game of his and obviously some are getting better rolls than others. As a player, he might be a Cleric or a Paladin, depending on your idea of God, but I like to think of him as a Druid. Imagine DMing a game with God as a player? How surreal would that be? Or playing on a table with him as a player? I wonder if he'd be the sort of gamer who sticks to the rules NO MATTER WHAT or if he plays a little more lightheartedly. Actually, I'd prefer it if he was the latter.
I have a feeling I may be overstepping the "curious gamer" mark into the more "watching my life fade away into nothingness" bounderies the more I think about this.
The parent-child relationship
A conversation with a close friend sparked this thought about the relationship we have with our parents.
Most people have generally felt, at some point in their lives, that they can't be themselves around their parents. For a some people, this is painful as their parents are a huge focus in their daily lives and other people just cut their parents out completely, seeing them at special events throughout the year, if that.
But what causes this distance we feel with our parents? For most people, your parents have known you your entire life. And you've changed a lot over the years. You loose contact with friends and other contacts, but physically speaking, your parents are always there. And that can be a bit of a problem, especially after the teenage years, when you're exploring the world outside of your own and developing a new identity for yourself. Parents aren't around for this change into the new you, and all of a sudden you're a new person talking to people who knew you before the change. It's like meeting up with someone you used to know - not sure how to act. But because they're your parents, and we love our parents! It's like trying to shove a square that used to be shaped like a triangle, into a triangular hole, and being horribly frustrated because it used to fit.
Thankfully, we can still build a new relationship with them. If you're honest about how you feel, and work out a way where you can both get what you want, a relationship is sure to grow. I'm a lucky soul, in that me and my parents sort of evolved into friends almost naturally. All thats left to answer is, what relationship do you want to have with your folks?
Joys of being scammed at work
Well, I suppose it had to happen sooner or later. I was lucky enough today to be "coin scammed", which wasnt a paticulary pleasent experience. The gist of coin scamming is confusing the cashier into giving the customer money that doesnt actually belong to them. Even though I spent a couple of hours after it feeling shaky and vunerable, I did enjoy figuring out how he managed to convince me into giving him £40 out of my till and running off before my brain caught up with what was going on.
Still, that was my first experience being scammed and I'm happy it took me 5 years of working in retail before it finally happened to me!
Blogging while tired should come with a warning label saying "Beware: You may write nonsense."
